Shed Sessions: Harry Torode

To kick things off, walk us through a day in your life…

“As a designer, no two days look the same; there is always something new or different to work on. I’m sure our project managers would like it to be a bit more routine, but with a constant flow of work from clients new and old, I get to work on a wide range of projects daily, whether that be podcasts and social media videos, websites, business cards or operational documents.”

Tell us about what sparked your interest in design and this line of work?

“I’ve always been interested in design, I was an ‘arty' kid and remember getting a camera for my 7th or 8th birthday. From then on, I was always running around taking pictures, and for the longest time, I wanted to be a photographer. My A-level Photography teacher, Mr Parry, was the person who introduced me to Graphic Design, with a conversation sparked by Peter Saville’s cover art on Unknown Pleasures.”

What do you enjoy most about working at Potting Shed?

“Variety. I enjoy working on different projects and using my skills to make things click. I find satisfaction from the processes we follow, and like being able to provide clients with high-quality creative work.”

Every day, rain or shine, you go for a swim. How did you get into daily sea-swimming, and what do you love about it?

“To be honest, I was horrifically hungover on New Year's Day a few years back, and one of my friends suggested we go for a swim. Despite previous comments on how mental you’d have to be to do that, I quite enjoyed it. I started going every week from then on, until it snowballed into a daily habit. I don’t really know what I love about it, but it resets me.”

If you could offer a young person who hopes to pursue a career in this field some advice, what would it be?

“This is a difficult one, but I’d say keep exploring. It’s quite amazing where experimentation can lead you and what skills you might pick up along the way. There are so many new technologies coming out that we use a lot at work, so there is always something to learn if you’re willing to try.”

Can you share your most memorable and/or interesting travel experience?

“I got food poisoning in St Petersburg, but that’s probably as much as you want to know about that.”

And, to end things on a lighter note… if you could fly to one country in the world right now, where would you go?

“I love the Nordics, so probably somewhere like the Faroe Islands.”

Testimonials

"Potting Shed took the time to understand the product and our purpose and created a clean, fun and fresh look which our clients comment on regularly. They then took the brand and product to the next level for us by creating our product video and website, and the storyboard and visual process that the team created really brought it to life."

These projects have contributed to a more connected team who believe in our organisation at a deep level. When your people believe in what you do and take ownership over their culture and workplace, growth is the natural outcome."
