Shed Session: Emily Devon

As a designer, what do you value most about being a part of the Potting Shed team?

It might sound a bit cliché, but it really is the team aspect. Everyone has each other’s back and genuinely acts as one another’s cheerleader. That level of support, collaboration, and joined-up thinking has always been important to me. Plus, being part of such an incredibly talented and creative team that consistently goes above and beyond for our clients is something I really value.

Share something people may not know about your role!

It’s all about the small details. A key part of my role is typesetting documents, so it’s not always about big design work. In typesetting, especially, it’s about spotting the little things, like widows and orphans, how paragraphs align, and even catching typos and spelling errors.

You’ve been on some fabulous holidays, Emily. Can you pick a favourite?

That’s a tough one! I’d probably have to say California. We did a classic road trip about 10 years ago and absolutely loved it. It was the perfect mix of city breaks and exploring national parks, all set against a stunning backdrop of mountains, redwoods, and coastline.

A little birdie told us that you’ve taken on a skydive before! What led you to do that?

Ha ha, this really was the ultimate ‘go above and beyond’ for a client! I was involved in the branding and design of a fundraising campaign for a local charity, and one of the ideas was to do a skydive. I’ve always been up for a challenge, and before I knew it, I was signed up! It was an incredible experience; my skydive was timed just as the sun was setting, and I remember seeing the headlights of cars driving along the Avenue, like a string of fairy lights, as we glided down the beach towards the landing site.

How would you define your design style?

Panic-led! Ha ha. I’ve always loved patterns and typography, so anywhere I can combine either, or both, I’ll definitely try.

On that note, what kind of design work excites you the most?

I LOVE working on print documents! Give me stationery or a 36-page brochure, and I’ll be super happy.

By special request… which TV sitcom character do you resonate with most?

I’ve always resonated with Moss from The IT Crowd. It’s definitely his social awkwardness, combined with his ability to end up in situations he’s not quite sure how he got there (refer back to the skydive question…!).

If you had to describe Potting Shed in three words, what would they be?

Creative. Caring. Legends.

To round off this interview, tell us your favourite thing about island life on Jersey!

Growing up in England, where our nearest beach was nearly two hours away, my favourite thing is being able to see the sea every day. I have two young children, and knowing that we can be on the beach within 5 minutes after school pick up is something I will never take for granted.

Testimonials

"Potting Shed took the time to understand the product and our purpose and created a clean, fun and fresh look which our clients comment on regularly. They then took the brand and product to the next level for us by creating our product video and website, and the storyboard and visual process that the team created really brought it to life."
