Shed Sessions: Abbie Morton

Let’s start with hearing what you enjoy most about being a Designer at Potting Shed!

The people, without a doubt.

Being part of such a supportive, friendly and talented team is the best. It really feels like a little creative hive, with everyone working together to produce the best work possible. I also love the variety of projects we get to work on. No two days are the same; there's always something new to get stuck into, and I'm constantly learning.

How would you describe your job in three words?

Collaborative. Rewarding. Problem-solving. (I'm counting that as one?!)

You love illustration, what drew you to that?

I was a very quiet, shy child with a big imagination, and I think art gave me a way to express myself in my own way. I did pretty well at it in school, and I remember there being a moment where something just clicked and I realised this was going to be an important part of my life.

Over (quite a lot of) time, I developed my own illustration style, and it's really helped shape my approach to graphic design too. I think there's something really special about being able to tell a story and connect with people through art.

Tell us about your favourite way to spend a Sunday!

A perfect Sunday (or any day really) always starts with a cup of tea, followed by a trip to the charity shops. I love having a rummage because you genuinely never know what you're going to find. Honestly, I'd say about 90% of what I own is second-hand.

I've recently moved into a house that needs some love, so these days my partner and I usually have some decorating or DIY project on the go. Other than that, I tend to see where the day takes me. I like to keep my Sundays as flexible as possible.

In an industry that’s always evolving, what motivates you to keep learning and adapting?

Honestly, it can feel overwhelming at times trying to keep up with AI and new technology. But I try to look at it from the perspective of "How can this help me create my best work?" I feel that mindset keeps me curious rather than intimidated.

I'm also really lucky to work in an environment where there's space to learn and develop, alongside a team that's always open to new ideas and tools. It makes evolving feel exciting rather than daunting.

If you could instantly become an expert at something, what would you choose?

Ooo, I'd have to say woodworking/carpentry. The possibilities would be endless. Tiny cabin in the garden? Too many built-in cupboards? Yes, please.

Do you have a piece of advice for someone who’s looking to begin their career in the creative industry?

I’d probably say get as much experience as you can, because it's the best way to discover what you enjoy and what your strengths are. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there, ask questions and learn from the people around you.

For aspiring designers specifically, spend time building your portfolio. If you don't have client work yet, create your own briefs, redesign something you've seen, or offer to create work for charities or local businesses. Not only will you develop your skills, but you'll also have strong, relevant projects to show when applying for roles.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

I can only apologise because this is horrendously cheesy, but it's a phrase that's genuinely stuck with me over the years. When I hear it, it reminds me to stop overthinking and just enjoy the journey.

So, to quote Mr Ronan Keating... "Life is a rollercoaster, just gotta ride it."

And c’mon, it's also an absolute banger.

Testimonials

"Potting Shed took the time to understand the product and our purpose and created a clean, fun and fresh look which our clients comment on regularly. They then took the brand and product to the next level for us by creating our product video and website, and the storyboard and visual process that the team created really brought it to life."
